Cheat Sheet

The Course

  • Liberty National Golf Club
  • Jersey City, New Jersey
  • Par 71
  • 7,387 yards
    • This event will bounce back and forth between Liberty National and TPC Boston
    • Designed by Robert Cupp and Tom Kite in 2006, it’s right on the water with a view of the Statue of Liberty
    • It hosted the Northern Trust in 2009 (which was called the Barclays back then), 2013, & 2019; and the Presidents Cup in 2017
    • My course history is of this event but remember that 2019 was the only year The Northern Trust was played on this same course out of my range of stats (2016-2020)
    • The course was made easier (shorter rough) after the 2009 Barclays but still plays harder than the average course
    • There are 10 water hazards, close to 100 bunkers, and fescue surrounding many of the holes
    • Small bentgrass greens, & bentgrass fairways; bluegrass rough
    • The greens are fast and undulating

Key Stats

  • SG: tee-to-green
  • Birdie or better
  • Par 5 scoring

The key stats are pretty basic this week due to lack of course history, but below is the top 20 from the last two times this event was played here (2019 & 2013). As you can see there is a good mix of short hitters and long hitters, tee-to-green guys and scramblers; so I’m not sure there is a secret formula to this course.

The Field

This week marks the first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs which will only be three events (before last year it was four events). The field will be 124 of the top players in the FedEx Cup standings, excluding Louis Oosthuizen who has elected to sit out the first week of the playoffs. There will be a cut line this week but there won’t be in either of the next two legs of the playoffs.
